OMAHA, Neb. — Those looking to peer into the Arizona Diamondbacks’ future were treated to a dream matchup Tuesday, as Vanderbilt took on TCU at the College World Series in Omaha.

On display were the D-backs’ top two picks from this month’s MLB draft. Representing the D-backs for the Commodores was shortstop Dansby Swanson, who Arizona selected with the no. 1 overall pick.

Unfortunately for Swanson, not only would he go 0-for-4 with two strikeouts against the Horned Frogs, but his previous outing versus Cal State Fullerton yielded a similarly disappointing result, as Swanson went 0-for-4 once again with one strikeout against the Titans.

Conversely, TCU pitcher Alex Young — the D-backs’ second round selection — was virtually unhittable against Vanderbilt. Lasting 7.2 innings, Young surrendered only three hits and an earned run, striking out 12.

The bad news for Young, however, was the fact that the one run he ceded ultimately made the difference in the ball game, as TCU fell to Vanderbilt 1-0.

The Commordores will advance to the semifinal round of the College World Series, while TCU will face LSU in what will be an elimination game for both the Horned Frogs and the Tigers.
