D-backs place Asdrubal Cabrera on waivers, Reds claim him

Aug 27, 2021, 11:12 AM

The Arizona Diamondbacks placed Asdrubal Cabrera on waivers before the Cincinnati Reds claimed the veteran infielder Friday, according to Jon Heyman.

Cabrera had been taking more days off as a regular starter amid the D-backs’ push to play their younger players.

The 35-year-old infielder joined Arizona on a one-year deal for the 2021 season and slashed .244/.324/.392 in 90 games played.

He recorded a total of 69 hits, 40 RBIs with 73 strikeouts to 33 walks so far this season.

Cabrera, who played for the Washington Nationals the past two years before joining the D-backs, primarily played third base but also saw limited action at first in 2021.

While manager Torey Lovullo credited Cabrera for helping his young players through the Diamondbacks’ 44-85 season so far, the skipper insinuated on Wednesday that Arizona would be having more conversations with veterans about the team giving prospects more opportunities.

“I think we’re ready to take it to the next level in a couple different situations,” Lovullo said.

Drew Ellis started for Arizona at third base in the last handful of games that saw Cabrera come off the bench.
