Arizona Cardinals sign TE David Wells to practice squad

Oct 20, 2021, 8:51 AM

The Arizona Cardinals announced Wednesday the they have added tight end David Wells to the practice squad.

It’s the latest look at a tight end amid a rash of health problems that started two weeks ago when starter Maxx Williams suffered a season-ending knee injury.

Arizona last week traded for former Philadelphia Eagles tight end Zach Ertz, but with him ineligible to play Sunday in a 37-14 win against the Cleveland Browns, it was on backup Darrell Daniels to start. Daniels suffered a hamstring injury in the second half of that game and did not return.

That left Demetrius Harris and practice squad call-up Ross Travis as the available tight ends to close the Week 6 road game.

The extent of Daniels’ injury is not known.

As Ertz hit the practice field on Wednesday, the Cardinals will get further looks at the backup options between Harris, Travis and Wells. The team also brought in long-time NFL veteran Richard Rodgers last week but cut him Saturday.

The 6-foot-6, 260-pound Wells has been on the practice squads for the Indianapolis Colts and Atlanta Falcons this year and was with the Falcons and New England Patriots during the preseason.

He went undrafted in 2018 out of San Diego State and has not yet appeared in an NFL game.
