Grit Index: D-backs’ Delgado gets no support from offense, bullpen in blowout to Rockies

Sep 21, 2013, 4:03 AM | Updated: 4:03 am

Randall Delgado’s first start at Coors Field could have gone a lot worse than it did.

Although he was neglected substantial support from his teammates — getting just two runs of offense in the five innings he pitched while seeing his bullpen allow seven runs, the right-hander managed to allow just a pair of earned runs in the Colorado Rockies’ hitter-friendly confines, allowing three hits and two walks.

The Arizona Diamondbacks got a two-run home run from centerfielder A.J. Pollock, his eighth of the season, in the first inning, but saw opposing pitcher Jhoulys Chacin settle in thereafter.

Chacin scattered baserunners throughout innings 2-6. And, despite walking five and allowing six hits in the game, he wouldn’t allow the Diamondbacks another run before exiting in line for his 14th win of the season.

For the Diamondbacks, Tony Sipp was the main culprit, as the left-hander gave up a pair of home runs in the 6th, ultimately allowing three runs on three hits and exiting the game before getting an out. The Rockies tacked on an extra run in the inning off of J.J. Putz, who used a pair of strikeouts to complete the frame.

Paul Goldschmidt’s 35th home run came in the following inning but his rally was unsupported.

Eury de La Rosa and Matt Langwell combined to allow another three runs in the 7th and 8th, before the Diamondbacks’ too-little-too-late two-out rally started in their final at-bat of the game, with Pollock scoring on a Goldschmidt hit up the middle.

The Good:

For Diamondbacks fans, the season has practically been reduced to cheering for their best player, Paul Goldschmidt, in his chase of MVP honors. He helped himself in that pursuit Friday, getting RBIs no. 120 and 121 and hitting his 35th home run. Goldschmidt leads has a 19-RBI lead on the Cincinnati Reds’ Jay Bruce, who is second in the category among NL hitters.

The Bad:

The Diamondbacks’ record hovers one game above .500, at 77-76, with nine games left to play.

Up Next:

Trevor Cahill (7-10, 4.32 ERA) looks to continue his recent success for the Diamondbacks, facing the Rockies’ Collin McHugh (0-1, 6.30 ERA) at Coors Field Saturday. First pitch is at 6:10 p.m. MDT and can be heard on Arizona Sports 620 AM.
