The Arizona Diamondbacks suffered their ugliest loss of the season Tuesday at the hand of the New York Mets.

Starting pitcher Jenrry Meija held the Diamondbacks to just two hits over five innings, extending Arizona’s losing streak to a season-high five games.

The Diamondbacks previously lost 12-2 this season to the Colorado Rockies, but Tuesday’s goose-egg loss was surely the worst of the season, as it amounted to the team’s seventh-straight home loss.

Diamondbacks starter Bronson Arroyo — hailed as an “innings eater” over the course of his career — lasted just 3.1, giving the Mets all nine of their earned runs on the night, with three coming in the first inning and six coming in the third.

Here’s a closer look at the loss, by the numbers:

0

The only positive of Tuesday’s loss came out of the bullpen, as Randall Delgado, Oliver Perez, J.J. Putz and Addison Reed combined to toss 5.2 scoreless innings, allowing just three Mets hitters to reach base. On a horrific night for the club, the Diamondbacks relief staff provided the only bright spot. Perez recorded a career-high four relief strikeouts as the staff combined for nine in the game.

1

The Diamondbacks have just one home win thus far this season, as they are 1-8 at Chase Field and 1-10 overall at home (counting the two games they hosted at Sydney Cricket Ground).

2

Diamondbacks starting pitchers have recorded just two quality starts in the team’s first 17 games. No other major league staff has recorded less than four.

3

Tuesday marked the third time the Diamondbacks have been shut out in their first 17 games this season. In 162 games last season, they were shut out seven times. They are currently on pace to be shut out 29 times in 2014.

4.2

Diamondbacks starting pitchers have lasted just 4.2 innings or less in eight of 17 games thus far.

5

The Diamondbacks extended their losing streak to five games after being drubbed by the Mets on Tuesday, tying their season-long losing streak from 2013, which was also extended to five games by New York. The Diamondbacks have lost all five games played thus far on their six-game homestand.

6

It took just four pitches for the Mets to load the bases against Diamondbacks pitcher Bronson Arroyo. It took them six to score.

7

The Diamondbacks lost their seventh straight home game in Tuesday’s crushing loss to the Mets.

9-8

In 2013, the Diamondbacks were 9-8 after their first 17 games. This season, they have less than half of those wins, at 4-13 after 17.

9.95

Arroyo’s ERA rose to 9.95 after allowing nine earned runs Tuesday. He is now 1-1 after getting knocked around by the Mets, to the tune of 10 hits, a home run, a walk and the aforementioned nine runs.

15-3

The Mets’ Triple-A affiliate, the Las Vegas 51s, came away road victors Tuesday as well, crushing the Triple-A Reno Aces, of the Arizona Diamondbacks, 6-3 in Reno.
