Arizona Diamondbacks shortstop Nick Ahmed will undergo an MRI on his right shoulder, MLB.com’s Steve Gilbert reported on Sunday.

Ahmed missed the final 15 games of the 2021 season due to the same injury, and Gilbert reported that the shortstop has received platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and cortisone injections since his last game to treat it.

Ahmed told the media in 2020 that he dived for a ball just before the season and first hurt his shoulder. That injury has nagged him since, according to Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic, although he has not had surgery.

The 32-year-old played in two early spring training games but not since March 21.

Manager Torey Lovullo told reporters that Ahmed is day-to-day, according to SB Nation’s Jack Sommers.

Ahmed first came up with the D-backs in 2014 and has since played 799 games for Arizona, 750 of which have been at shortstop. He has been a staple at the position, winning two gold gloves in 2018 and 2019.

Josh Rojas played the second-most games at shortstop last year behind Ahmed, although he worked primarily at third base early in camp. Geraldo Perdomo is also on the 40-man roster, and the 22-year-old played in 10 games at shortstop last season with the big-league club.

The D-backs additionally traded for shortstop Sergio Alcantara on Sunday, sending cash considerations to the Chicago Cubs. Alcantara appeared in 89 games with 64 starts last season.

Opening Day is on April 7.
