The Arizona Diamondbacks called up third baseman Yonny Hernandez, the team announced Tuesday.
Additionally, the team optioned Drew Ellis to the Triple-A Reno Aces.
Arizona acquired Hernandez on Thursday in an Opening Day trade with the Texas Rangers. The D-backs sent back outfielder Jeferson Espinal in the deal.
Hernandez, who made his MLB debut last August, averaged .217 and slugged .252 to go along with 31 hits, six RBIs, 15 runs scored and 11 stolen bases over 43 games (166 plate appearances) in 2021. The infielder had been in the Rangers’ farm system since 2015.
A majority of Hernandez’s games played last season were at third base (29), followed by second (nine) and shortstop (six).
Ellis heads down to the Aces after three games with Arizona.
In eight plate appearances this season, Ellis recorded a hit and an RBI. He also struck out four times.
Ellis got the nod at third base with projected starter Josh Rojas out of the lineup with a Grade 2 right oblique strain.
Rojas, along with shortstop Nick Ahmed (right shoulder inflammation) and outfielder Jordan Luplow (right oblique strain), started the year on the 10-day injured list.
The D-backs open up their two-game series against the Houston Astros on Tuesday night at 6:40 p.m. Tune to 98.7 FM Arizona’s Sports Station for all the action.
