D-backs fall to Nationals in another walk-off: By The Numbers

The Arizona Diamondbacks’ road trip somehow worsened Wednesday.

For the fourth time in the last nine games, they had to watch another team rollick in walk-off bliss, after Anthony Rendon drove in Bryce Harper to secure the Washington Nationals’ series win and fifth walk-off win in their last six games.

Trevor Cahill again turned in a solid effort, but his team was unable to come to his side with support until the eighth inning when Ender Inciarte’s third home run of the season tied the contest, 2-2.

A ninth-inning rally against D-backs relief pitcher Evan Marshall spoiled both Cahill and Inciarte’s endeavors, however, with the away team recording but one out in the final frame.

Here’s a look at the D-backs’ fifth straight loss, by the numbers:

D-backs hitters went 0-for-5 with runners in scoring position Wednesday, stranding seven total baserunners.

Middle infield duo, Didi Gregorius and Aaron Hill, managed three double plays Wednesday against the Nationals. At the plate, they combined to go 0-for-8.

After losing via walk-off to the Cleveland Indians on the road trip-opening game, the D-backs went on to drop their series opener in Miami in the same style to the Marlins, then leaving for Washington where they’ve lost in walk-offs on Monday and then did so again Wednesday.

Cahill turned in his fifth consecutive quality start for the D-backs Wednesday, winning two of those.

Seven of the D-backs’ last nine games have been decided by one run. They’ve won one two of those contests.

Manager Matt Williams led the Nationals to their ninth straight win Wednesday against the D-backs.

Cahill threw first-pitch strikes to 20 of the 27 batters he faced Wednesday.

Cahill threw 103 pitches Wednesday, making it the fourth consecutive game in which the right-hander has thrown more than 100 pitches. Not before four starts ago, on Aug. 3, had Cahill been able to toss more than 100 pitches in a game.
