Dodgers’ six-run inning does in Cahill, D-backs: By The Numbers

To suggest that Arizona Diamondbacks right-hander Trevor Cahill had been rolling in the month of August leading up to Tuesday’s start at Chase Field would by no means have been an understatement.

Cahill took to the mound for the opener of the D-backs’ two-game set with the Los Angeles Dodgers sporting a 2-0 record with a 2.33 ERA to go along with four quality starts in his last four appearances.

The National League West’s reigning champs paid no attention to the 25-year-old’s gaudy stats, however.

Matt Kemp launched a two-run shot in the first, Carl Crawford, Justin Turner and Robert Hernandez set in motion a six-run fourth inning with three RBI singles, and the Dodgers coasted to an 9-5 rout in the divisional affair.

With the win, Los Angeles improved 11-4 this season against Arizona.

For Cahill, the defeat was his first since a 3-0 result against the Cincinnati Reds back on July 29.

The D-backs found themselves on the wrong side of two reviews in the fourth inning.

Despite being thrown out at home by Ender Inciarte for the second out in the inning, Crawford was awarded home plate after a crew-chief review deemed Miguel Montero tagged him with the ball in his other hand.

Hernandez was also awarded first base later in the inning, after an initial ruling of an RBI groundout by Gerry Davis was overturned and ruled an infield single.

For just the third time in 13 career starts against the Dodgers, Cahill allowed three or more runs.

Prior to Tuesday’s outing, Cahill had not allowed three or more runs in any start since April 13 against Los Angeles.

The six runs Arizona allowed in the top of the fourth was tied for the second-highest total in a frame at Chase Field this season.

Earlier in the month, the Kansas City Royals tallied eight runs in the fifth en route to a 12-2 shellacking.

Cahill allowed eight runs on the evening (six earned), including six in the fourth.

Statistically, the performance was his worst in a D-backs uniform since the eight earned runs he surrendered in a 10-5 loss to the San Francisco Giants back on June 8, 2013.

In 2014, Cahill has given up 17 earned runs when opposed by the Dodgers — the most he’s allowed against any team.

Inciarte collected two hits and three RBI in a losing effort. Since June 24, Inciarte leads all rookies with 59 hits.
