D-backs shut out by Giants pitching as Collmenter again gets no support: By The Numbers

It doesn’t really matter how awesome Josh Collmenter has been lately; his offense has been awful.
On game nine of a 10-game road trip Wednesday, the right-hander strung on his fourth consecutive stellar start, allowing no runs over 6.0 innings for the Arizona Diamondbacks, but his team’s two hits were far from enough to best Ryan Vogelsong and the San Francisco Giants. The home team easily prevailed, 5-0.
Neither pitcher got a decision, though cruising through the game’s first six innings. Instead, Oliver Perez would be the culprit for the D-backs while Jean Machi emerged the victor for the Giants, improving to 7-1 on the season.
Here’s a look at the loss, by the numbers.
0.65
Collmenter has been outstanding over his last four starts, allowing just two earned runs in 27.2 innings pitched — good for an ERA of 0.65 in that stretch. He has allowed just 18 men to reach base in all four of those starts combined, striking out 19. The right-hander has a 2-0 record in the span.
2
The D-backs managed just two hits Wednesday, with both coming off the bat of third baseman Jake Lamb. Didi Gregorius also managed to get on base twice, both times via a walk.
2.77
Perez’s season ERA has ballooned by nearly a full run in his last two appearances, in which he has allowed three earned runs in each. Prior to Sept. 7, when he got just one out while allowing the Los Angeles Dodgers three earned runs, the left-hander hadn’t allowed more than two runs in any of his 61 season appearances. In fact, only three times had he allowed more than one run in an outing. Wednesday, he took the loss, falling to 3-4 on the year after allowing three runs in the seventh inning, giving the Giants their first lead of the game.
5
All five of the runs given up by D-backs pitching came via the bullpen, and each relief pitcher played a part. Perez, Evan Marshall and Addison Reed each allowed the Giants to score in the late innings, with both Marshall and Reed allowing an earned run apiece.
7
The D-backs have scored two runs or less in seven of the nine games they’ve played thus far on the road trip, which they have gone 2-7 on with the finale coming Thursday in San Francisco.
10
Outfielder A.J. Pollock stole his 10th base of the season Wednesday. Only Ender Inciarte (14) has more on the season. Injured first baseman Paul Goldschmidt has nine.
12
The D-backs suffered their 12th shutout of the season Wednesday in San Francisco. In 2013, they were only shut out seven times. The franchise hasn’t been shut out so frequently in a season since 2003 and not since their inaugural season, in 1998, were they shut out more than 12 times.
17
D-backs 1-5 hitters combined to go 0-for-17 Wednesday at AT&T Park.
