Arizona Wildcats junior wide receiver Jacob Cowing was named to the 2022 Maxwell Award watch list on Monday followed by the Biletnikoff Award preseason watch list on Thursday.
He joins 84 other student-athletes on the Maxwell watch list, which also includes South Carolina quarterback and fellow Valley native Spencer Rattler. The Maxwell Award has been awarded to the College Player of the Year since 1937. It’s named after Robert Maxwell, a former standout at Swarthmore College, sportswriter and football official.
The Biletnikoff honor is given to the best pass-catcher in the nation. There are 43 players on that preseason list.
Cowing, a Maricopa High School alum, is entering his first season with the Wildcats after spending the past three seasons at UTEP. Over the course of his career with the Miners, Cowing amassed more than 2,500 yards and 13 touchdowns.
He was quick to make his name known his first year, leading all Conference USA freshmen with 550 receiving yards. He ranked 13th nationally.
Then during his final year with the Miners, Cowing posted career marks across the board, recording 69 catches for 1,354 yards and seven touchdowns. He also ran the rock four times for 75 yards and a score.
For his efforts, Cowing picked up a First Team All-Conference USA nod in 2021 after securing a second-team selection the year prior.
Semifinalists for the Maxwell Award will be revealed Nov. 1 before the three finalists are announced Nov. 22.
Last year’s winner of the award was Alabama quarterback Bryce Young, who is once again on the list in 2022.
