Ketel Marte’s tremendous postseason for D-backs continues, ties records in NLCS

Oct 23, 2023, 4:41 PM | Updated: Oct 24, 2023, 2:23 pm

Ketel Marte is having a postseason for the record books with his timely hitting.

With the D-backs facing elimination, Marte tripled in the fifth inning of Monday’s Game 6 of the National League Championship series, scoring Corbin Carroll to give the D-backs a 4-1 lead in the fifth inning. The second baseman then singled to score Geraldo Perdomo and extend the D-backs’ lead to 5-1 in the seventh inning.

Marte after the single improved his batting average to .383 this postseason with a 1.046 OPS, and with his triple tonight, he has hit safely in each of his first 15 career postseason games to tie the longest streak in postseason history with Marquis Grissom (15 games in 1995-96).

Marte’s 18 hits this postseason ranks second-most in a single postseason in franchise history. Steve Finley had 19 hits when the D-backs won the 2001 World Series.

Marte’s 15-game hitting streak is also tied for the sixth-longest in postseason history, behind only: Manny Ramírez who had a 17-game streak in 2003-04, Derek Jeter who had a 17-game streak in 1998-99, Hank Bauer who had a 17-game streak in 1956-58, Michael Brantley who had a 16-game streak in 2020-21 and Pat Borders who had a 16-game streak in 1991-93, according to Sarah Langs.

After Marte’s RBI triple, Philadelphia yanked Aaron Nola, who gave up four earned runs and six hits in 4.1 innings. Michael Lorenzen came in to pitch for the Phillies.

In Game 3 of the 2023 NLCS, Marte hit a walk-off single for his third hit of the game to give the D-backs a 2–1 win. Marte has also hit two home runs this postseason. He took Milwaukee’s Corbin Burnes deep in Game 1 of the wild card series and he hit a home run off Lance Lynn in Game 3 of the NLDS to help the D-backs sweep the Dodgers.

Marte was traded to Arizona from Seattle before the 2017 season. The second baseman hit .276 with 25 homers and 82 RBI during the 2023 regular season. He also stole eight bases and posted an .844 OPS.  The 2019 All-Star signed a five-year, $76 million contract extension with the D-backs on March 2022.
