Big sixth inning keeps Diamondbacks from series sweep: By the Numbers

Arizona Diamondbacks starter Jeremy Hellickson matched San Francisco Giants starter Tim Hudson pitch-for-pitch through the first five innings Sunday at AT&T Park.

Hellickson had retired 15 of the first 18 batters he faced until Angel Pagan stepped into the box to lead off the sixth inning and promptly singled to left. Alejandro De Aza followed with a double to give the Giants a 1-0 lead and two batters later Buster Posey hit a three-run home run en route to a 5-1 Giants win.

Hellickson took the loss, pitching five innings, giving up two runs on three hits. He struck out five and walked two.

David Peralta was responsible for the D-backs lone run when he hit his 16th home run in the ninth.

The Diamondbacks were looking at sweeping the Giants for the second time this year in San Francisco. The D-backs swept the Giants June 12-14.

Peralta and Ender Inciarte were responsible for five of the D-backs six hits. Inciarte had three hits while Peralta had two hits including his ninth inning home run.

At 71-78, the Diamondbacks are enjoying a nine game improvement over a year ago this time. Last year at this time, the D-backs were 62-93.

With Sunday’s loss, the D-backs have been officially eliminated from winning the National League West and thus eliminated from the postseason. It’s been four years since the D-backs clinched a spot in the postseason.

The Diamondbacks have swept six teams this year and were hoping to make it seven with a win Sunday.
