The race to be the Arizona Diamondbacks’ No. 5 starter took a turn Monday, as the team optioned Archie Bradley and Tyler Wagner to Triple-A Reno on Monday.
Bradley had posted a 2-1 record with a 9.00 ERA in spring training. He allowed 15 hits and five walks while striking out nine in 10 innings of work.
Wagner, who was acquired in the offseason in the deal that brought Jean Segura to Arizona, posted a 3-0 record with a 4.50 ERA in 10 innings. He allowed 11 hits while walking three and striking out six.
With those two no longer in the running, the race for the final rotation spot seems to have come down to Zack Godley and Robbie Ray.
Based on spring Ray would appear to have an edge, as he has a 1.86 ERA in 9.2 innings, whereas Godley has an 11.88 ERA in 8.1 innings.
Optioning Bradley and Wagner to Reno were not the only moves made by the D-backs Monday, as they also sent pitcher Keith Hessler and outfielder Gabriel Guerrero to Double-A Mobile and reassigned outfielder Zach Borenstein to minor league camp.
