Jean Segura’s inside-the-park homer continues hot start to D-backs career

Apr 7, 2016, 9:05 PM | Updated: 10:54 pm

While it will be awhile before the Diamondbacks can be fairly judged on their controversial trade for infielder Jean Segura, the new lead-off hitter for four games has proved criticisms of the deal incorrect.

The second baseman came into Thursday with two hits in each of his first three outings against the Colorado Rockies. He only added to his cause in the opening game of a series against the Chicago Cubs on Thursday when he gave Arizona a 1-0 head start with a home run off John Lackey’s first pitch.

It only got more wild Segura’s second time up.

His shot to left-center field led to a collision between Chicago outfielders Dexter Fowler and Kyle Schwarber, and as the two Cubs struggled to get up, Segura blew around the bases for an inside-the-park home run.

He joined a couple of lists for bests starts to a game.

Not a bad way for Segura to quiet the haters.

After the play, Schwarber left the game on a cart with a left ankle sprain. The x-rays were reportedly negative for a break.
