Jake Arrieta hadn’t lost a game in a while.

A while, meaning since July 25 of last season. That was up until Sunday at least.

The Arizona Diamondbacks got to Arrieta early and held on at the end to beat the Chicago Cubs 3-2.

Most of the damage was done in the second inning, as the first three hitters of the frame got a knock off Arrieta, with Yasmany Tomas producing the big two-run double to score Chris Herrmann and Chris Owings.

Patrick Corbin didn’t need much more support than that.

Corbin outdueled Arrieta for his third win of the season, rebounding from his shortest outing of the season in which he gave up nine hits and seven runs in 3.1 innings.

Corbin gave seven innings of work, only giving up two runs on five hits, to go along with five strikeouts. He was able to keep the ball out of the air for the majority of the day, getting 15 outs on the ground while allowing one home run. Corbin is now 3-5 with a 4.73 ERA on the year.

Of course, the 2015 Cy Young Award winner did his usual thing. He struck out a season-high 12 batters and only gave up three runs, but he also gave up a season-high nine hits, which were the most hits he’s allowed since May 7, 2015.

For the Diamondbacks, this was their first win at Wrigley Field since April 24, 2014.

For the Cubs, this was their second straight loss in a game started by Arrieta, a streak that hasn’t happened since May 2-7, 2015. In between those two streaks, the Cubs tied a MLB record by winning 23 straight games when Arrieta started on the mound.
