LISTEN: Logan Thomas - Cardinals quarterback

Last month, the Arizona Cardinals selected Virginia Tech quarterback Logan Thomas with the 120th pick of the NFL Draft.

The consensus on Thomas heading into the draft was that he was big, strong, had a freakish athletic ability, a rocket arm and all kinds of accuracy issues. In his three years as a starter for the Hokies, Thomas completed just 55.8 percent of his passes and threw 39 interceptions.

But in just three weeks of organized team activities (OTAs), the 22-year-old has seen an improvement in the accuracy category.

“It’s footwork stuff,” Thomas told Doug and Wolf Wednesday on Arizona Sports 98.7 FM. “There were some spots where I got myself into trouble by stepping too far up in the pocket instead of staying where I should be.

“And then there were some times I was not getting enough speed and depth on my drops, which kind of did the same thing for me. So, it’s just ironing out some of the small things.”

Jumping to the NFL is all about adjustments, including learning a new offense. But Thomas believes that the Cardinals’ offense is not any more difficult than what he ran during his college career in Blacksburg.

“The complexity is about the same, it’s just that it’s sometimes completely different,” he said. “What we have here is a push it down the field-type of offense, which obviously is a little different than most types of offenses are, so that’s just taking a little time getting used to.”

Not only is Thomas learning from fellow former Tech quarterback and head coach Bruce Arians, he’s also picking the brain of Carson Palmer, a veteran with 11 seasons of experience under his belt.

“I love learning from Carson, he’s such a great guy and he’s got a wealth of knowledge in his head,” Thomas said. “The more I can pick up on, the better. So when we’re here in the building, I’m pretty much trying to pick up everything that he does.”
