The Arizona Cardinals placed starting running back Andre Ellington on injured reserve and signed safety Chris Clemons on Monday.

Ellington, the Cardinals’ sixth-round draft pick in 2013, missed Sunday’s game against the Kansas City Chiefs with a hip injury. Coach Bruce Arians announced after the game that Ellington will undergo hernia surgery and will miss the rest of the season.

The second-year pro had 652 rushing yards, 371 receiving yards and five total touchdowns in 12 games this season, following up a rookie season in which he had a combined 1,023 yards and averaged an NFL-best 5.5 yards per carry.

Clemons started 48 games for the Miami Dolphins from 2009-13. He recorded 256 total tackles, four interceptions, two forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries. He had 90 total tackles (60 solo) and an interception for the Dolphins last season.

Clemons, a fifth-round pick by the Dolphins in the 2009 NFL Draft, signed with the Houston Texans in the offseason but was released before the regular season began.

Ellington and Clemons both played college football at Clemson.
