ARIZONA DIAMONDBACKS

D-backs’ 18-inning win, by the numbers

The Arizona Diamondbacks beat the Philadelphia Phillies 12-7 in 18 innings Saturday at Citizens Bank Park in what was the longest major league baseball game since 1989.

It was a wacky affair, featuring 44 different players, a pair of position player mound cameos, a first-inning starting pitcher exit and an 18th inning Trevor Cahill base hit.

And there’s a lot more where that came from.

Here’s the Diamondbacks’ 18-inning win, by the numbers.

7:06

Both the time of first pitch and the time of game. The contest was the longest in franchise history for the Diamondbacks, cruising past the previous mark of 5:53, set back in May of 2001.

2

The amount of outs Phillies starter Ethan Martin managed Saturday, before his first-inning exit. Martin allowed three earned runs in the game and his early troubles, and departure, would end up dooming his team, which ultimately used 11 pitchers in the game.

18

The number of times the Diamondbacks walked in the marathon. Tony Campana and Cliff Pennington each tallied five walks.

22

The number of players used by both Ryne Sandberg and the Phillies and Kirk Gibson and the Diamondbacks. Both looked to starting pitchers for help, with Tyler Cloyd pitching five scoreless innings for the Phillies and Trevor Cahill going four strong for the Diamondbacks, allowing zero runs and getting the win.

1916

The year a pair of teammates last walked five times apiece in the same game, as Campana and Pennington did Saturday.

20

The amount of combined pitchers used in the game, tying a major league record.

92

Phillies outfielder Casper Wells’ peak velocity in his 18th inning appearance.

52

The number of pitches thrown by Phillies position players in the game. Along with Wells, who threw 40 pitches in the game’s final inning, former Diamondback John McDonald entered the game in relief for the Phillies.

24

The number of blown saves the Diamondbacks bullpen has been charged with the season, tying the major league lead. Heath Bell blew his National League-leading seventh save in the contest, allowing two earned runs in the seventh inning, when the Phillies completed their six-run comeback.

9-17

The innings of the game in which no runs were scored by either team, before the Diamondbacks finally broke the stalemate in the 18th.

19

The total number of extra-innings games the Diamondbacks have played in this season. They have played in three that have lasted 16 innings or longer.

2:12

The time the game ended local time.
