Early Monday, Arizona Diamondbacks manager Kirk Gibson was linked to the Detroit Tigers managerial opening following Jim Leyland’s decision to step down after eight seasons.

Arizona Sports has learned, however, that Gibson would not leave the Diamondbacks to go to the Tigers.

Gibson, who was drafted by the Tigers in the 1978 MLB Draft, played his first nine big league seasons in Detroit and won a World Series in 1984.

A Michigan native, Gibson served as the team’s bench coach from 2003-05 and hitting coach in the second half of the 2005 season.

The former National Manager of the Year has compiled a 290-279 record in three-plus seasons with the D-backs and led the team to a division title and postseason appearance in 2011.

Gibson is under contract with Arizona through the 2014 season, with options for 2015 and 2016.
