Campana, Miley come up big in D-backs’ walk-off win over Brewers: By The Numbers

Arizona Diamondbacks left-hander Wade Miley threw 109 pitches Wednesday. And of those 109 pitches, only one turned out to be a mistake.

Former Deer Valley High School standout Khris Davis launched a three-run home run off of Miley to knot the National League contest at three in the top of the fourth, but it would prove to be the only notable hit the Milwaukee Brewers would record off the 27-year-old all evening.

Sandwiched on both sides of Davis’ long ball, however, was arguably one of Miley’s most-pristine outings of the 2014 campaign.

The third-year starter went 7.2 innings, allowing only three earned runs on five hits. Additionally, he struck out eight batters.

However, despite his best efforts Miley didn’t factor in the final decision.

Brad Ziegler came in relief of Miley with two outs in the eighth and retired Aramis Ramirez on strikes to conclude the frame.

And after another scoreless inning in the ninth, light-hitting outfielder Tony Campana finished things off for Arizona.

Campana laced the second pitch he saw from Brandon Kintzler, a 92 MPH sinker, up the middle to plate Martin Prado for the game-winning run, as the D-backs snapped their two-game skid with a 4-3 victory.

Here’s a look back at the walk-off win by the numbers:

After allowing 11 runs in its last three games, the D-backs bullpen was perfect Wednesday, as Ziegler was flawless over 1.1 innings of work.

1:

For Campana, the single was his first hit in a game since April 24 vs. the Chicago Cubs. It also marked the first walk-off knock in the 28-year-old’s career.

A night after serving up the go-ahead grand slam to Jonathan Lucroy, Ziegler tied both a career and season high with three strikeouts.

4:

Arizona has produced four walk-off wins through 75 games. Three of those four wins have come with game-winning hits produced by D-backs outfielders — A.J. Pollock, Gerardo Parra and Campana.

Reigning National League MVP runner-up Paul Goldschmidt swiped his sixth bag of 2014 in the bottom of the third. He moved to within two of A.J. Pollock for the team lead.

Of the team-leading 17 home runs Miley has surrendered, eight have come with runners on base.

Rookie shortstop Chris Owings collected multiple hits (single, double and triple) in a game for the 16th time this season. Twelve of those 16 occurrences have come at Chase Field.

16-of-18:

Matt Garza didn’t earn his fifth career win against the D-backs, but he certainly was stellar as the game went along. Of the last 18 batters he faced, the Brewers right-hander retired 16 of them.

After missing the first two games of the four-game series, Brewers outfielder Carlos Gomez returned to action. Gomez finished 1-for-3 on the evening but extended his career-best hitting streak to 14 games in the fourth. He has also reached base safely in 31 straight.
