Larry Fitzgerald held to one big catch in Arizona Cardinals’ win over Chargers

GLENDALE, Ariz. — Larry Fitzgerald.

Pro Bowler. Future Hall of Famer. Face of the Arizona Cardinals franchise. Decoy?

Monday night against the San Diego Chargers, Fitzgerald was targeted just four times by quarterback Carson Palmer, good for fourth-most on the team.

The first attempt to him came with 12:43 left in the fourth quarter on a pass that was too far out of bounds but that he caught with one hand.

Palmer misfired again looking for Fitzgerald on the team’s next drive, with 6:50 left, but on the third try there was success, with Fitz making a diving catch on a nice pass for 22 yards.

It was as important a reception as any, as it helped keep a game-winning drive alive.

And if the Cardinals hadn’t escaped with an 18-17 win like they did, chances are Fitzgerald’s quiet night would be an even bigger story than it is.

“They had definitely keyed on Larry; everybody we play knows where Larry is,” Palmer said. “It was kind of one of those games where he doesn’t get a bunch of touches but has one of the biggest plays of the game.”

Palmer praised the job Fitzgerald did on his lone reception, fending off cornerback Brandon Flowers without drawing a pass interference penalty to make the diving grab.
