On a day when the Phoenix Suns, Arizona Coyotes and University of Arizona and Arizona State men’s basketball teams all played, what may have got lost in the shuffle among sports fans in the state is Grand Canyon University’s upset win over New Mexico.
The Lobos were 8-3 and had won five in a row heading into Tuesday’s matchup in Phoenix, but GCU’s Joshua Braun, who scored 18 points, intercepted an inbounds pass in the final seconds to secure a 68-65 upset victory.
The Antelopes improved to .500 (7-7) with the win. They are now tied with Seattle (6-6) for the best winning percentage in the WAC.
Grand Canyon has released a video of the final seconds of Tuesday’s upset and the raucous celebration that followed. Let’s just say if you picture Dan Majerle as a laid-back, unapproachable kind of coach, your opinion of him is about to be changed.
