The Arizona Diamondbacks continue to evaluate the void left by Shelby Miller’s season-ending Tommy John surgery, and one potential band-aid might be on the free agent market. According to a source of SB Nation’s Chris Cotillo, the D-backs were among four teams that attended a Thursday workout of free agent starting pitcher Doug Fister.

The 33-year-old also threw for the New York Mets, Toronto Blue Jays and Los Angeles Angels, all of whom seek starting pitching. Fister also previously worked out in front of the San Francisco Giants, Cotillo reports.

Fister, an eight-year MLB veteran, remained unsigned this offseason after going 12-13 (32 starts) with a 4.64 ERA for the Houston Astros last year.

The right-hander has a career 77-76 record and 3.60 ERA.

Arizona remains in flux regarding who will replace Miller. Without the right-hander, the team has so far gotten a start each out of Triple-A Reno pitchers Zack Godley and Braden Shipley.

Godley allowed two runs over five innings on April 26 against the San Diego Padres, while Shipley started Thursday and gave up three runs while walking six in four innings in a loss to the Nationals.

Godley will get another audition opportunity against the Detroit Tigers this Wednesday at Chase Field.
