D-backs start game with back-to-back-to-back home runs

Jul 21, 2017, 7:32 PM | Updated: 7:33 pm

The Arizona Diamondbacks had the best possible outcome for their first three batters to start their series Friday against the Washington Nationals, hitting back-to-back-to-back home runs.

It started with David Peralta leading off the bottom of the first to hit his tenth of the season. A.J. Pollock smashed his fourth soon after on the next at-bat. Then, Jake Lamb clobbered his 23rd to make it 3-0 D-backs.

It was the first time it was done to start a game in franchise history.

The strangest part of the sequence had to be the pitcher that was giving up the home runs.

Former D-back Max Scherzer was on the mound sacrificing the long bombs. He entered Friday’s affair with a 2.01 ERA in 19 starts and had allowed just one home run in his last 34.2 innings. He was also a career 5-0 against his former club.

Paul Goldschmidt would keep the hitting streak alive with a single on the next batter, but Daniel Descalso’s strikeout ended the hit parade. The inning went all the way to the pitcher’s spot, where Zack Godley struck out to end the inning. It took 37 pitches for Scherzer to get through the first.
