Arizona Diamondbacks infielder Chris Owings left Sunday’s game against the St. Louis Cardinals with a fractured right middle finger, D-backs manager Torey Lovullo said after the game.

Owings was placed on the 60-day disabled list on Monday while at the same time announcing a trade for Adam Rosales from the Oakland Athletics.

Owings was attempting to put down a bunt during his second at-bat when an inside pitch caught his hand.

The versatile shortstop, who can also play second base or in the outfield, was scheduled to travel back to Arizona for further diagnosis. Lovullo did not know if there was a timetable for the recovery.

“He went down fighting,” Lovullo said. “It’s time to rely on one another and pick each other up.”

Owings is hitting .268 with 12 home runs and 51 RBI this season.

Arizona is suddenly thin at shortstop, where Ketel Marte will likely see more starts.

Nick Ahmed went down in June and underwent hand surgery; he had pins removed from his hand last week and could be at least a week away from a return.
