Bidwill, Doan and Majerle among 2017 Arizona Sports Hall of Fame class

The Arizona Sports Hall of Fame will induct a 2017 class including several notable names.

One of those is Arizona Cardinals owner Bill Bidwill, who is in his eighth decade running the franchise. Other names include long-time Arizona Coyotes captain Shane Doan, and Grand Canyon University men’s basketball head coach and Phoenix Suns Ring of Honor member Dan Majerle.

Doan spent over two decades with the franchise, captaining from 2003 to this past season. He retired in the 2017 offseason 28 points shy of reaching 1,000 for his career.

“Thunder Dan” is known for his time with the Suns but is quickly becoming a bigger name in the community for his time in charge of the Antelopes. After a four-year wait, Majerle’s team is now Division I eligible, looking to make an appearance in the NCAA Tournament.

The last two inductees are sports journalist Paola Boivin and Arizona State wrestler Anthony Robles.

Boivin, who now teaches at ASU’s Cronkite School, spent over 20 years as an award-winning sports journalist at The Arizona Republic.

Robles was a state champion at Mesa High School, an NCAA champion in 2011 and a three-time All-American despite being born with one leg.

The Arizona Sports Hall of Fame was founded in 1957 but revitalized in 2009. Last year’s class included former Cardinals safety Adrian Wilson and former D-backs pitcher Randy Johnson.

This year’s class will be honored on Nov. 1.
