Is there bad blood brewing between the Arizona Diamondbacks and San Diego Padres?

It’s certainly possible, and one incident during the ninth inning of Sunday’s game did nothing to stop those feeling from the Padres’ side.

San Diego manager Andy Green told reporters after Sunday’s 8-4 loss to the D-backs that Arizona closer Greg Holland should have been ejected for throwing two consecutive pitches behind Francisco Mejia.

The incident came with two outs and no runners on base. It was a possible carryover from Saturday, when the Padres plunked two D-backs and came close to doing so on several other occasions.

“Umpire’s literally being clueless on the field right now,” Green said of the incident. “That’s inexcusable at that point in time. You’d love to be able to make an excuse for him, but there’s no excuse right there.

“The first one? OK, maybe it slips. The second one? We know what’s going on there. It’s not lost on us and if it’s lost on [the umpires], they’re not paying attention to the baseball game.”

D-backs manager Torey Lovullo denied postgame that Holland was intentionally trying to throw at Mejia.

“I just think they were some misses, to be honest with you,” Lovullo said. “He got three outs and ended the game, so that’s all I’m really concerned about. We won the baseball game.”

The two teams are already familiar with each other, having played seven games in the first three weeks of the season.

Whether this grows into a bigger issue remains to be seen. The two teams next play a three-game series in San Diego from May 20-22.
