D-backs’ Gibson isn’t taking success for granted

The Arizona Diamondbacks are over .500 in late May for the first time since 2008. That doesn’t mean manager Kirk Gibson is letting his team’s recent success go to his head, at least publicly.

“The thing is you just can’t stop,” Gibson told reporters after Wednesday night’s game. “We don’t want to let our guard down ever. We’ve got a long way to go.”

It’s an attitude that makes sense for a club that has lost a combined 189 games over the last two season. Taking any success for granted would be spiting in the face of the ‘baseball gods’ or at the very least forgetting that the last two season have taught just how fast things can go bad.

The manager’s mentality seems to have been embodied by the team as well. Their highs haven’t been too high and their lows haven’t been too low (with the exception of Justin Upton firing his battling helmet into the ground).

They’re winning close ball games and their rotation and bullpen have been workman like just going out and getting the job done.

Will the D-backs’ hot streak continue? We don’t know, but there is a much better chance of it happening with Gibson leading the way he is rather than taking their current success for granted.
