After every Arizona Diamondbacks game we’ll examine the
box score and provide you with instant analysis. So it’s
time to go Inside the Box for June 18, 2011: Diamondbacks 7, Royals 2
The Good:
The D-backs hitters put together a string of runs over four-innings that built them to a win and also looked to be demoralizing to the Royals pitching staff.
It all started in the fifth inning when call-up Wily Mo Pena swatted his first MLB home run since 2008. In the following three innings, Upton, Parra, Roberts and Young all drove in runs for the D-backs.
The Bad:
Joe Saunders ended up throwing a good game, but he sure made us nervous in the first inning. Saunder had been o the mound for about five minutes before Royals lead-off batter Alex Gordon smashed a homer to right. Saunders has had issues during the first inning throughout the season, but managed to get himself back under control and threw seven total innings, only allowing one more run.
The Funky:
Wily Mo Pena showed why he was called up to be a DH for the D-backs in the fifth inning when he blasted the second-longest home run of his career at the Royals’ Kauffman Stadium.
