Arizona Diamondbacks place J.J. Putz on the disabled list

Jul 1, 2011, 8:51 PM | Updated: 9:57 pm

The Arizona Diamondbacks announced a myriad of roster moves on Friday. One came as a bit of surprise.

According to general manager Kevin Towers, the club placed closer J.J. Putz on the 15-day disabled list due to right elbow tendinitis. The move is retroactive to June 29.

While the move wasn’t expected, it does make sense. During the month of June Putz struggled. In 11.2 innings of work he posted a 6.17 ERA while blowing four saves. It was a far cry from his first two months of work where he had a 1.57 ERA and converted all 16 of his save opportunities.

For the year Putz is 1-2 with 21 saves and a 3.12 ERA in 34 appearances.

Putz has a history of elbow issues stemming back to 2006 and his days in Seattle.

It’s not clear who will close games for the Diamondbacks in Putz’s absence, but the likely candidate is right-hander David Hernandez, though he’s had his own struggles in the month of June.

Along with placing Putz on the disabled list, the D-backs selected the contract of infielder Sean Burroughs from Triple-A Reno and reinstated right-handed reliever Sam Demel from the disabled list.
