Diamondbacks fall to Brewers in marathon game: By the Numbers

May 31, 2015, 6:03 PM | Updated: 6:03 pm

...

Five hours and 49 minutes after the first pitch of Sunday’s Diamondbacks game in Milwaukee, a solo shot to center by Brewers catcher Martin Maldonado stole Arizona’s chance at a sweep.

The Brewers won it 7-6 in 17 innnings — it was the longest game in Miller Park history by 27 minutes.

After hitting two home runs in Saturday’s 7-3 win, D-backs first baseman Paul Goldschmidt went deep again, hitting his 15th home run of the season — a solo shot in the first inning — but was walked in his four final at-bats, three of which were intentional.

Mark Trumbo also sent one over the yellow stripe, and the D-backs pitched 10 shutout innings of relief before Maldonado homered off Vidal Nuno.

The Diamondbacks held a four-run lead heading into the bottom of the fourth, but starting pitcher Chase Anderson gave up six runs off 10 hits with just three strikeouts in his five innings pitched, and was credited with the go-ahead run in the bottom of the sixth.

Trumbo’s homer made it 6-6 in the eighth, and Arizona’s bullpen kept it even with 10 scoreless innings pitched until the final frame.

What were the numbers?

98

Goldschmidt’s solo home run in the first inning moved him into seventh place on the team’s all-time homer list (98), passing Miguel Montero.

9

The D-backs have now homered in a season-high nine straight games. The streak is the team’s longest since a nine-game stretch spanning from April 29-May 8, 2013.

7

Goldschmidt reached base safely seven times, which is a D-backs franchise record. He had three hits and four walks, three of which were intentional.

And, there was this:

8 (part I)

Following their 16-hit effort Sunday in Milwaukee, the D-backs have tallied 10 or more hits in eight straight games versus the Brewers at Miller Park. It’s the longest streak by the D-backs at an opposing stadium in franchise history. The previous team record was six games in a row with 10 or more hits at Coors Field (May 21-Sept. 22, 1999, April 14-June 24, 2001 and Aug. 15, 2006-April 4, 2007).

8 (part II)

Before the walkoff home run, Nuno retired eight straight batters.

8 (part III)

Goldschmidt reached base safely seven times, and became the first player in D-backs franchise history to do so in a single game.

5:23

Once the game reached the five-hour, 23-minute mark in the 16th inning, it became the longest game in history at Miller Park.

Arizona had tied the previous record at the ballpark, a five-hour, 22-minute effort on April 22, 2012.
