Former Arizona Wildcats coach Kevin Sumlin has been named head coach of the new United States Football League’s Houston Gamblers.

Sumlin most recently coached Arizona from 2018-20 where he posted a 9-20 record over three seasons.

He joins former Arizona Cardinals offensive coordinator Todd Haley who will coach the Tampa Bay Bandits.

The USFL originally was founded in 1983 but disbanded after just three seasons. The league’s resurrection will begin on April 16 with eight teams and games being aired on Fox, FS1, NBC, Peacock and USA Network, according to the league.

The eight teams include the Gamblers, Bandits, New Jersey Generals, Philadelphia Stars, Michigan Panthers, Pittsburgh Maulers, Birmingham Stallions and New Orleans Breakers.

Former then-San Diego Chargers head coach Mike Riley (Generals) and Bart Andrus (Stars) round out the first four coaches announced for the league, with the remaining four coming at a later date.

A player selection meeting comprising rosters of 38 players will occur from Feb. 22-23 before training camp kicks off on March 21.
