Collmenter, Hill lead D-backs past Phillies for 3rd straight win: By The Numbers

“Whoa, that was close,” as Tommy Callahan would say.

The Arizona Diamondbacks built a nice 4-0 lead Friday night on the Philadelphia Phillies through six innings, but things started getting shaky once starter Josh Collmenter left the game.

Philadelphia scored three in the top of the seventh inning and one more in the ninth, but A.J. Pollock’s homer in between that made the difference as the Diamondbacks held on for a 5-4 victory, their third win in a row.

It’s the D-backs’ first three-game streak since Sept. 16, 2013, and they improved to 8-18 on the season with Friday’s win, dropping the Phillies to 11-12, fourth in the NL East.

Although closer Addison Reed earned his third save in as many days, he allowed three baserunners, even after retiring the first two. Two of the baserunners advanced to second after singling in the inning. Reed allowed two hits, one walk and one run before earning his sixth save of the season.

Second baseman Aaron Hill had a strong outing for the D-backs. His two-run shot in the fourth inning was his first homer against the Phillies in nearly four years — and his second of the season. He drove in another run with a double the following inning. His three RBI gave him 12 on the season — fourth-highest on the team.

After Collmenter went 6.0 scoreless innings, the D-backs paraded five pitchers out of the bullpen before closing the game with a lead that dwindled to one. Joe Thatcher got beat up the worst, allowing two hits and two runs in just 0.1 innings.

First baseman Paul Goldschmidt is quietly putting together another hitting streak. He only went 1-for-4 in the game for one RBI and one run scored, but it was good enough to extend his hitting streak to seven games.

The D-backs snapped an unflattering eight-game home losing streak Friday. They are now 2-11 at home on the season, still the worst mark by far in the Majors.

After going 1-for-4 in the contest, right fielder Gerardo Parra has hit safely in 12 of the 16 games in which he’s batted leadoff this season.

Collmenter gave up four hits and struck out five in 6.0 innings of scoreless work, giving him his first win as a starter in exactly 19 months — last one being on Sept. 25, 2012, against the San Francisco Giants. He also became the first D-backs pitcher to throw at least 6.0 scoreless innings since Wade Miley on Sept. 24, 2013.

In his 22nd game played of the season, Pollock hit a homer in the eighth to give him two on the year. The center fielder hit two home runs in his seventh game played in 2013, and had his third homer by his 21st game; he finished with eight on the season. The 26-year-old outfielder had one other hit in four at-bats Friday, raising his average to .250.

Arizona raised its winning percentage to .308 with the win, which is still last in the National League, but not far behind Chicago. The D-backs are now 4.0 games behind the NL West’s 4th-place San Diego Padres and 6.5 games back of the division-leading Giants.
