Arroyo, D-backs blank Padres in series opener: By The Numbers

An ace took the mound Friday night at Petco Park.

And yet, San Diego Padres right-hander Andrew Cashner wasn’t the starting pitcher to finish with a line of three hits allowed over seven scoreless innings.

That performance belonged to first-year Arizona Diamondback Bronson Arroyo, who for the better part of his first month in Sedona red labored through a handful of innings before unceremoniously exiting.

However, Arroyo looked every bit worth the two-year, $23.5 million contract he signed back in February, striking out six en route to his second win of the campaign.

Arroyo took care of his part on the mound and Aaron Hill carried the load offensively with one swing of the bat in the top of the third, as the D-backs opened their 10-game road trip in short order, topping the Padres by a final of 2-0.

Here’s a look back at the two-run victory by the numbers:

1:

Ender Inciarte ripped a double down the left field line in the top of the ninth Friday for his first career hit. The 23-year-old finished the contest 1-for-4 at the dish.

2:

Even in victory, Arizona managed to add on to its error total. Blunders in the field by Arroyo and catcher Miguel Montero pushed the D-backs’ to 29 on the season — two shy of the league-worst Los Angeles Dodgers.

Hill’s run-scoring single proved to be the difference in the opener of the three-game set. He’s hitting .393 over his last nine appearances.

The D-backs’ crafty 37-year-old struck out a season-high six batters. He struck out at least six in 10 of his outings a season ago.

7:

Arroyo completed seven innings for the first time all season. As a member of the Cincinnati Reds in 2013, the veteran right-hander achieved the feat 13 times.

.875:

Closer Addison Reed finished off the contest with a perfect ninth inning. With the scoreless frame, Reed picked up his seventh save in eight chances (.875 conversion rating).

17:

The Padres have scored two runs or less in 17 of their first 29 games this season.

32:

The 2-0 win marked the first time in 32 games that the D-backs have shut out an opponent. It took only 10 games in 2013.

300:

Kirk Gibson picked up his 300th career victory as a result of the shutout. He’s third on the all-time list behind Bob Melvin (337) and Bob Brenly (303).
