Miley, D-backs fail to complete first series sweep of season: By The Numbers

The elusive first sweep of the 2014 season will have to wait at least one more series for the Arizona Diamondbacks.

After receiving back-to-back fantastic outings out of starting pitchers Brandon McCarthy and Bronson Arroyo, the D-backs couldn’t quite close the door in Sunday’s finale.

Although, fellow starter Wade Miley wasn’t to blame at Petco Park.

Miley threw seven strong innings, allowing just three runs while striking out four.

Paul Goldschmidt supplied the power with his fifth long ball of the season, but outside of a three-run third inning, the D-backs’ bats were silent against Padres right-hander Tyson Ross.

After the headliners pitched their way to a standstill, the NL West clash became a battle of bullpens — one which the home squad took in thrilling fashion.

Cameron Maybin led off the bottom of the ninth with an replay-confirmed, infield single off of Oliver Perez, Rene Rivera followed with his second two-bagger of the afternoon and a one-hopper to Goldschmidt off the bat of Yonder Alonso did the final damage, as the Padres walked off with a 4-3 win on U.S. Navy Appreciation Day.

Here’s a look back at the one-run loss by the numbers:

1:

Of their 23 losses, Sunday marked the first time the D-backs fell in walk-off fashion in 2014. Arizona has lost four one-run games so far this season.

Back-up catcher Tuffy Gosewisch’s two-run single in the third was the first hit of his career that plated more than a single run.

In four of six games this week, Arizona relievers allowed at least one run in the ninth inning.

Ross has enjoyed facing Sedona red since the beginning of 2013. In his last four starts against Arizona, the right-hander has allowed six earned runs in 29 innings of work — 1.86 ERA.

While he didn’t get the win Sunday, Miley became the fourth straight D-backs pitcher to complete seven innings of work — the staff’s longest streak to date.

10:

D-backs manager Kirk Gibson rested Miguel Montero for the final game of the three-game set — ending the veteran backstop’s 10-game start streak. Montero came on as a defensive replacement in the ninth.

4/15/2006:

Heading into Sunday’s affair, Rivera had one double all season. In fact, the 30-year-old catcher hasn’t had two doubles in a game since he was a member of the Seattle Mariners back on April 15, 2006.
