The Arizona Diamondbacks found themselves with a rare opportunity on Sunday — a chance at a series sweep.

But as has often been the case this season, the D-backs’ offense went stagnant behind a solid pitching performance, and Arizona fell to the New York Mets 4-2 in the second game of a doubleheader.

The Arizona offense mustered just five hits while Zeke Spruill allowed three runs in 5.1 innings in a spot-start necessitated by a rainout on Friday.

Here’s a closer look at the loss, By The Numbers:

0

The D-backs didn’t mount back-to-back hits a single time in the second game of Sunday’s doubleheader, and just six Diamondbacks reached base.

2

Sunday’s night cap marked the second time this season the D-backs have had a chance for a sweep, but the D-backs have lost in both of those chances. They also dropped the final game of a three-game set to the San Diego Padres to open May after winning the series’ first two games.

3 (part I)

Sunday’s doubleheader was the third time the Mets and D-backs have played twice in one day. The D-backs had swept the previous two before splitting on Sunday.

3 (part II)

Diamondbacks right-hander Trevor Cahill has been much more effective since moving to a bullpen role, but he struggled on Sunday, walking three Mets hitters while giving up three hits and a run in two innings of action.

6

Despite dropping Sunday’s night cap, the D-backs secured their sixth series win of the season by taking two of three from the Mets.

10

D-backs right-hander Zeke Spruill allowed 10 hits in a spot-start on Sunday in his first major-league action of the season. He gave up three earned runs and allowed two walks.

16

Sunday marked the 16th doubleheader in D-backs history. They have swept five times, split eight and been swept three times.
