Pirates run away from Anderson, D-backs: By The Numbers

Jul 3, 2014, 2:42 AM | Updated: 2:53 am

It took a three-run ninth inning for the Arizona Diamondbacks to fall to the Pittsburgh Pirates in heartbreaking fashion Tuesday night.

The D-backs made it a little easier on themselves Wednesday.

Pittsburgh jumped out to a first-inning lead and added a pair of runs in both the second and eighth innings and D-backs starter Chase Anderson didn’t last four innings as the Pirates topped the D-backs 5-1 at PNC Park in Pittsburgh.

Here’s a closer look at the loss, by the numbers:

.200

D-backs shortstop Didi Gregorius has seen his batting average drop to the Mendoza line after an 0-for-3 showing with two strikeouts Wednesday.

2.84

Arizona reliever Matt Stites — the club’s top relief prospect entering the season — now owns a 2.84 in his inaugural stint in the major leagues. He has allowed just two runs while striking out six over 6.1 innings, though both runs came Wednesday.

3

The Diamondbacks made three errors on Wednesday, though the pitching staff didn’t allow any unearned runs. Martin Prado, Gerardo Parra and Gregorius each made a fielding miscue in the game. Arizona has committed 63 errors this season — the second-worst number in baseball.

3.2

Anderson lasted just 3.2 innings Wednesday — by far the worst start of his short major league career. He allowed three runs on eight hits while walking out three and striking out five.

10

Arizona left 10 runners on base in Wednesday’s game, thanks to a 1-for-6 performance with runners in scoring position.

23

D-backs first baseman Paul Goldschmidt has now reached base in 23 consecutive games after a 3-for-4 performance Wednesday. His season batting average is at .305 after dipping to .299 earlier in the week.
