There had been some thought that Jerraud Powers might eventually return to the Arizona Cardinals, but that will not be the case.

Powers spent three seasons with the Cardinals after coming over as a free agent from the Indianapolis Colts. Last season, he posted 41 total tackles with one interception, one sack, 10 passes defensed and two fumble recoveries.

The 28-year-old collected five interceptions in his three seasons with Arizona, where  he bounced around from the outside to the inside. After the team’s NFC Championship Game loss to the Carolina Panthers he acknowledged the possibility that it could have been his final game in a Cardinals uniform.

“But it’s just one of those situations that I’m in,” he said of being a free agent. “Every player thinks about it; you think about it, but you just don’t let it affect your play or whatever. It’s a business, at the end of the day. The NFL is a big business so we understand how it goes or what not. Of course, all the guys that are here, we want to be here next year because we feel like we’ve got something special, especially in the secondary, but at the end of the day if they want us, we’ll be here. If not, you’ve just got to move on.”

Powers is the second starter from Arizona’s secondary to leave this offseason, as safety Rashad Johnson signed a one-year contract with the Tennessee Titans in March.

The Cardinals did not add a cornerback in the early parts of free agency, but did draft two in third-round pick Brandon Williams and sixth-round choice Harlan Miller. Given their inexperience, many believed the Cardinals would look to add a veteran cornerback to the mix, with Powers being a likely option.

With Powers gone, Patrick Peterson and Justin Bethel are set to start on the outside. Tyrann Mathieu, a safety, could play inside as the nickel corner.

The team also met with free agent Leon Hall in March, and as of now he remains unsigned.
