The Arizona Wildcats have extended basketball coach Sean Miller’s contract through the 2022 season after the state’s board of regents approved the proposal Thursday, according to the Arizona Daily Star.

Including base salary that will reach $1.8 million after $100,000 yearly raises, plus media and shoe contracts, Miller’s salary will reach $2.9 million. On top of $700,000 for media, radio and television duties, he will be paid $200,000 each by Nike and IMG, plus another $10,000 as an endorser of Nike Elite.

If he reaches 2022 still with the Arizona program, he will be eligible to acquire a retention bonus set up in the form of a Longevity Fund created through a private donor. He was already contracted to acquire 175,000 units of that in May 2020 but is now eligible for 50,000 more in 2022 — those extra 50,000 were repurposed from outgoing athletic director Greg Byrne’s contract that is set up similarly.

All of the money that could be headed Miller’s way is from athletic department revenues and endorsements from IMG and Nike, and it is not paid for by University of Arizona tuition or the state.

Interim Arizona athletic director Erika Barnes presented the proposed extension to the Arizona Board of Regents in Tempe.

The extension comes as Miller has coached the Wildcats to a 20-2 record and a No. 5 ranking, according to the Associated Press rankings.
