Diamondbacks, Pirates games goes into rain delay before 12th inning

The law of averages is scientifically proven.

After the Diamondbacks put together a two-hour, 10-minute outing Tuesday behind Robbie Ray’s first career shutout, the Wednesday matchup against the Pittsburgh Pirates was bound to go long.

The 9:35 a.m. MST start hit a rough patch in the ninth when dark clouds appeared on the horizon. Including an hour-and-a-half rain delay, the game finally came to an end with a 6-5 D-backs victory at 3:52 p.m. MST, making it a six-plus hour outing overall.

Arizona led 4-3 in the ninth before closer Fernando Rodney got into trouble and allowed a game-tying run to force extra innings.

Even as rain began pouring, the game wore on.

It appeared close to over when, after D-backs shortstop Nick Ahmed blasted a solo home run with two outs in the top of the 11th, Arizona loaded the bases. But Andrew McCutchen caught a deep fly by Paul Goldschmidt to end the frame with the Diamondbacks up just 5-4.

Turns out, that was important because Pittsburgh’s Jordy Mercer hit a two-out home run off D-backs reliever J.J. Hoover in the bottom of the inning to tie it, 5-5.

The tarp came out shortly after the 11th ended, and viewers were not pleased.

With no baseball to report on, writers at the game had little to report upon.

Meanwhile, team accounts had to tweet … something not about baseball.
