Cardinals looking to move up for Gabbert?

Rumors and speculation leading up to the NFL Draft can be exciting, if not stressful. And, for a team like the Cardinals, every little bit of what-could-be-real-info has fans on the edge of their seats, waiting to react one way or another.

The Cards have been linked to multiple players, most notably Von Miller and Blaine Gabbert. However, many seem to think they will be unwilling to take a chance on a quarterback at number 5, not with so many other holes that need to be filled.

How about at number two?

Boom.

If this report is to be believed, the Cardinals may actually be willing to take the plunge with the Missouri star, believing that he can be the team’s quarterback of the future. Without knowing exactly what it would take to move up a few slots, we can surmise the Cardinals, if they actually do swing a trade, have a strong belief that Gabbert is the guy the team needs. While you may disagree, many ‘experts’ view Gabbert as the top quarterback in the draft, and we saw first-hand what a quality rookie QB can do to a franchise when the St. Louis Rams were battling for the NFC West crown in Sam Bradford’s inaugural campaign.

As we all found out (the hard way) last season, quarterback is the most important position on the field. A star can lead a team to the playoffs while a Derek Anderson can lead them to oblivion. Without a capable signal caller a team is pretty much doomed, so the team must find that guy, either through the draft or trade. If Ken Whisenhunt feels Gabbert is the player to lead the team back to the postseason, who are we to argue?

Besides, ultimately you’d have to appreciate the team’s conviction in identifying and acquiring the player they want. A proactive approach would be a welcome change for a franchise that usually waits for things to happen around them before making a move, and ensuring they get a player they are comfortable with should absolutely be the goal April 28th.
