Arizona’s Trier feeling snubbed, left off Jerry West Award finalist list

Arizona junior guard Allonzo Trier knows his resume.
So when he was left off the list of finalists for the Jerry West Award, which will be given to the best shooting guard in college basketball, he was left wondering what else he needs to do.
Boston College’s Jerome Robinson, Creighton’s Marcus Foster, Duke’s Grayson Allen, Oakland’s Kendrick Nunn and Purdue’s Carson Edwards all made the final cut.

With the exception of Nunn, who is averaging 25.9 points and carrying the load of taking 20 shots per game for the Golden Grizzlies, all of them have comparable averages to Trier. Where the national committee of Jerry West Award voters may have missed was when it comes to efficiency.

Per Synergy Sports, Trier is the fourth-best player when it comes to points per possession. None of them are shooting guards.
Only Arizona’s Deandre Ayton, and Villanova’s Mikal Bridges and Jalen Brunson rate better than Trier.
After averaging 18.9 points, 3.2 rebounds and 3.3 assists per game while shooting 52 percent overall and 40 percent from three-point range, Trier went to Twitter on Tuesday to express what he’s probably feeling as a slight by the award’s committee.

His first tweet borrowed a lyric from Drake — “opinions over statistics” — and reminds of Phoenix Suns guard Devin Booker’s tweet when he was snubbed in the NBA All-Star voting.
Trier wasn’t done there.

It would seem that with a curious suspension behind Trier due to a positive drug test, plus an ESPN report on the program that forced a brief leave of absence by head coach Sean Miller, the Wildcats have plenty of chips on their shoulders entering the Pac-12 Tournament.
