Following a close loss to Louisville City FC in the USL Cup final on Thursday evening, Phoenix Rising FC striker Didier Drogba dropped a hint that he may not be retiring after all.
During an interview with ESPN’s Ian Holyman in March, Drogba announced that he would retire at the end of the season.
“I started late at the top level,” Drogba said. “I really enjoy playing. I like my role of owner-player a lot. I’m surrounded by a lot of youngsters, and I like passing my know-how on to them. But this season is the last. I’m 40, it’s time now.”
Now that the time has actually come for Drogba to hang up his cleats, he may not be so sure of his original decision. Drogba tweeted a short clip of the Martin Scorsese film “The Wolf of Wall Street,” in which Leonardo DiCaprio’s character announces that he won’t be leaving the firm that he works for.

Drogba’s caption was simple and to the point: “Retirement???”
It’s up to the general public to interpret Drogba’s tweet, as no official statement was made regarding his plan to retire. With that in mind, it seems as if the 40-year-old might have some unfinished business in Phoenix.
In 21 games over the last two years for Phoenix Rising, Drogba has scored 12 goals and assisted on four others.
The last two years have been pivotal in the development of Phoenix Rising, largely in part to the leadership role assumed by Drogba both on and off the pitch.
