The University of Arizona football program has suspended offensive lineman Edgar Burrola for violating coronavirus protocols, the school confirmed to the Arizona Daily Star’s Michael Lev.

Head coach Kevin Sumlin released a statement to Lev.

There’s some people that are saying that we’re making guys do this, we’re making guys do that. What we are making them do is go through the protocol. And if you’re not gonna adhere to the protocol, then we can’t have you here.

It’s my job to protect and uphold that protocol for everybody else that’s involved in this organization — players, coaches, administrators, medical (personnel). You’ve got coaches’ families.

If you’re not gonna pay attention to the protocol, wear a mask, all that other stuff, we just can’t have you around.

Burrola posted a message to his Instagram and Twitter that he had been suspended, and has been tweeting his way through the suspension since Monday.

Burrola claims he has had his scholarship “reduced” by having his meal plan taken away and confirmed that he was not following the COVID-19 protocol.

Since voluntary workouts began, the Wildcats have had three players test positive for COVID-19.

Burrola has voiced his own skepticism over some elements of the pandemic.

Burrola started six games at right tackle last season as a redshirt junior.
