Edgar Renteria would be a good fit with the Diamondbacks

If the Diamondbacks are looking to acquire another shortstop for the stretch run, they could do plenty worse than Cincinnati’s Edgar Renteria.

“He’s not great, he’s not going to set the world on fire,” Sports 620 KTAR’s Doug Franz said. “But I like him for a couple of reasons.

“He’s not going to get in the way of any shortstop prospect you’re trying to bring along in any way and he’s just another veteran presence.”

Franz says it would be beneficial for the D-backs to find another option at shortstop because Willie Bloomquist, as good as he’s been, is not a guy you want as your starting shortstop.

“I’m not saying Edgar Renteria is that much different, but to be able to have these guys going back and forth in that position I think is a great pickup.”

You won’t find many people willing to argue with Franz on this one.

Though the 36-year-old is hitting just .245 this season, his play has picked up of late and, quite frankly, the guy knows how to get it done in the postseason.

So whether it’s because of a need for depth at short, another veteran presence or just solid production, Renteria would be a good fit for the Arizona Diamondbacks.

We’ll see if they can make it happen.
