Kevin Towers credited for helping D-backs win now

Diamondbacks general manager Kevin Towers was ranked 3rd
among five GMs who helped their teams win during the
offseason by ESPN’s Jim Bowden.

Bowden, who has 15 years of experience in the front office
as senior vice president and GM for the Cincinnati Reds and
Washington Nationals, credited Towers for his acquisitions
of three pitchers and an outfielder in December 2011.

New players include former 18-game winner Trevor Cahill,
relievers Craig Breslow and Takashi Saito, and outfielder
Jason Kubel.

Towers was recognized for his strategic trading technique
refusing “to pull the trigger on the Cahill deal until
Breslow was included,” Bowden said. The pitchers strengthen
the rotation that already holds Ian Kennedy, Josh
Collmenter, and Daniel Hundson.

In the two years Towers has been with the organization, he
helped reconstruct the bullpen from a 2010 average 4.81 ERA
to a last season’s 3.80 ERA.
