The bar for this season’s award NL Rookie of the Year Award has been set high though the Arizona Diamondbacks’ Yasmany Tomas has put his name in the conversation.

After signing a six-year, $68.5 million deal this offseason, expectations were high for the Cuban-born player.

Despite not making the Opening Day roster and hitting a mere .235 through his first nine games, Tomas has turned in a monster first half.

The outfielder has batted behind Paul Goldschmidt in the lineup on a consistent basis through the last month, and is a key cog in the Diamondbacks’ lineup.

He ranks among the leaders in many offensive categories among National League rookies, and has set some franchise rookie marks at the midway point of the MLB season.
