Jason Terry is leaving the coaching staff with the Arizona Wildcats to become the head coach of the G League’s Grand Rapids Gold, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.

Terry spent just one season as an assistant coach with his alma mater under head coach Sean Miller. Arizona’s new head coach Tommy Lloyd had retained Terry to be a part of his coaching staff.

Terry delivered with Arizona as a player with an NCAA championship in 1997 and he was named the Pac-10 Player of the Year in 1999 following his senior season. He scored 21.9 points per game in his senior year along with 5.5 assists and 2.8 steals per game, the last of which remains a program record.

He was selected with the 10th overall pick by the Atlanta Hawks in the 1999 NBA Draft.

Terry was looking to become a head coach following a 19-year career in the NBA that included a Sixth Man of the Year honor in 2009 and an NBA championship with the Dallas Mavericks in the 2010-11 season. His new role with Grand Rapids, the G League affiliate of the Denver Nuggets, is his first head coaching position.

Terry previously held an assistant general manager role with the G League’s Texas Legends, affiliated with Dallas, for the 2019-20 G League season before taking the assistant coaching role with Arizona.
