ASU, Arizona among favored landing spots for OU transfer Spencer Rattler

Nov 30, 2021, 10:25 AM

Pinnacle High School product Spencer Rattler announced Monday he would enter the transfer portal and depart the Oklahoma Sooners, and that news caught the attention of more than a few Arizonans.

Both Power 5 schools in the state could be interested in acquiring the services of the Phoenix-raised quarterback.

The Arizona State Sun Devils are the favorites (-300) to land Rattler, according to SportsBetting.ag. The next-highest odds belong to Ole Miss (+600).

ASU (8-4) could potentially have interest depending on how head coach Herm Edwards feels about the future of current quarterback Jayden Daniels, who threw 10 touchdowns to nine interceptions in 2021. Daniels averaged a career-low 7.9 yards per pass attempt and his lowest passer rating of his three years as a starter.

The South Carolina Gamecocks (+800), SMU Mustangs (+1000) and USC Trojans (+1000), are also in the mix for Rattler — USC just hired Oklahoma head coach Lincoln Riley away from Norman, Okla.

After that, the Arizona Wildcats (+1400), Texas Longhorns (+1400) and Texas A&M Aggies (+1400) have somewhat favorable odds to land the former five-star recruit.

Arizona (1-11) started three quarterbacks in 2020, losing Gunner Cruz and Jordan McCloud to serious injuries. They and end-of-year starter Will Plummer led an offense that finished the season averaging 17.2 points per game, the seventh-worst mark in the country.

Rattler was likely looking for a fresh opportunity before Riley surprised by leaving OU for USC.

The quarterback went in and out of the starting unit for the Sooners this past season, splitting some time with freshman Caleb Williams. Rattler completed 75% of his passes for 1,483 yards, 11 touchdowns and five interceptions.
